++The Young Karl Marx++
Germany, France, Belgium, 118 min., 2015-17, Drama, Biography
Director: Raoul Peck
Cast : August Diehl, Stefan Konarske, Vicky Krieps
1844: 26-year old Karl Marx, debt-ridden and troubled by existential fears, lives together with his wife Jenny in exile in Paris. When he meets the slightly younger Friedrich Engels, he initially despises the factory-owner’s son for being a dandy. However, they eventually become friends and the two like-minded men find inspiration in each other. Together they draft publications designed to provide the inevitable revolution with a theoretical superstructure. Their aspiration is not just to interpret the world, but to change it fundamentally. Raoul Peck describes the origins of the international socialist movement, the emergence of the Communist League and its foundation document – the Communist Manifesto. At the same time, the film depicts two impetuous men who strictly believe in the vision of a humane community and in the revolutionary power of the exploited and oppressed. The Young Karl Marx” is impressively complete. It is a solid biopic production which – due to the very personal narrative style – throws new light on Karl Marx as a person.
