Heidi lives with her aunt but is sent off to the mountains to live with her stubborn grandfather Alpöhi. Heidi settles down amazingly quickly and is happy to stay there forever. Her aunt, however, changes her mind and decides it would be better if Heidi grew up in a more distinguished family where she could learn to read and write. Heidi is sent to live with the Sesemann family in Frankfurt, where she is expected to be a playmate for Klara, their paralysed daughter. But Heidi does not feel happy in the city. She misses life in the mountains and begins to sleepwalk. Eventually, everyone understands that Heidi really belongs in the Alps, where she is most eagerly awaited.
