▪️Bangkok Shibari
Documentary 51:45

(EN and TH with TH / EN subtitles).
Shibari is the traditional Japanese art of rope bondage. People outside of this subculture often misunderstand shibari. Assuming it is just about restraints and sex. But experienced practitioners will argue that shibari is actually more about feelings and connection.
.
This independent documentary explores Bangkok’s vibrant shibari subculture through the voices of the community itself. Practitioners speak directly to camera, sharing their personal journeys—what drew them to rope, what sustains their practice, and how shibari shapes their inner lives.
.
Visually striking and emotionally resonant, shibari is a study in contrast: soft skin and rough rope, vulnerability and control, restraint and release. It can be intimate, meditative, and therapeutic. Shibari also inspires artists, with its beauty, and the pathos of bound figures.
.
As shibari gains global recognition, Thailand has emerged as a respected centre of expertise. Shaped by Japanese tradition, European influence, and a distinctly Thai sensibility.

▪️The Ties That Bind Us – Shibari Malaysia
Documentary 11:38
(EN with TH subtitles)

.
Enter the mesmerising world of shibari with this mini documentary by Nicky Almasy, where this art takes an unexpected turn. Practitioners of the art talk openly about their experiences. In doing so, we explore issues of gender identity, individuality, and sometimes the isolation and alienation that comes with challenging cultural norms, and being true to yourself.
.
Shibari Malaysia, founded by Lisa Anthony, uses rope as a medium to explore the depths of human identity through her ropes, crafting experiences that honour vulnerability, embodiment, trust, and the quiet intelligence of the body. Rooted in mindfulness and creative expression, her approach invites individuals and couples into deeper connection with themselves and each other.

▪️Ocean Of Strings
Music and Shibari 3:21
(EN with EN and TH subtitles)

.
Bondage, woven with beauty and decadence. Questioning oneself in a fiercely captivating yet sensually artistic perspective with bondage artist and professional dancer; “Is freedom truly happiness?” The introduction awakens one in a cocoon of bondage resembling the womb, wrapped in a mysterious yet sacred choir. As the music intensifies, struggling to break free from the ropes – does happiness await, or something else?…
.
WasaVi, is a Japanese artist, and composer, who lures us into a decadent fantasy world with vivid, thematic scene descriptions. His work is woven with vibrant stories conducted with diverse sounds and a unique chanting vocal style, conveying pain and conflict.
