Here in Siam our bond with nature spirits of the Old Religion has not been broken by the forced imposition of master race religiosity. Yet, perhaps due to the sharper intensity of their long suffering, once again we are reminded that Philippino cinema far surpasses us in originality and authenticity in its depiction of the ‘faerie’. The yearning for reconnection is palpable. This is not just for those obsessed with jellyfish and other ancient immortal lifeforms symbolic of the Source Code. Horror, thriller, mystic folk tale, ‘Medusae’ works on so many levels, most chillingly as a cinematic ritual of human sacrifice—and why not? The callous voice in our head continues: a good for nothin’ troublemaking albino (fake white) delinquent is the perfect lamb of sacrifice for the Mother Sea of Philippines.
