The Funeral

The film portrays the everyday lives of a team involved in the making and delivery of funeral structures in northern Thailand. These elaborately crafted structures are traditionally burned together with the deceased, reflecting the beliefs and customs surrounding death in the community. Through various funeral ceremonies, questions about death, belief, and tradition gradually emerge.

The funeral procession, or Song Sakan, is the traditional Lanna practice of carrying the deceased to the cemetery or cremation site, according to customs preserved in northern Thailand.

In a community in Chiang Rai where traditional Lanna customs are still deeply preserved, whenever someone passes away, the family contacts a small workshop in the village that specializes in building funeral structures. The craftsmen themselves are members of the same community. They carefully construct each structure from wood, paper, and fabric, spending days attending to every detail with the same dedication they might give to building a home for their own family member—creating a dignified and graceful final passage. Then, one day, it is time to carry the structure through the rain.

The funeral structure is too heavy for one person to bear. It takes the strength of many people working together to carry it toward its final destination. And when the procession finally arrives, everything they have painstakingly created is consumed by flames. Every carefully crafted detail disappears within minutes, leaving behind nothing but ashes. It makes little difference whether the structure was small and modest or grand and elaborate.

Yet there is something strangely beautiful in this act of disappearance. It resembles life itself: how we all try to build something as beautiful and meaningful as we can, even knowing that one day it will inevitably vanish.

This documentary brings viewers closer to a ritual of farewell in a small community, inviting us to contemplate death from a perspective we may never have considered before.
