“The tragedy of Artist and Musician in the Apocalypse and the poem of the Last Sorrow” is director Achitaphon Piansukprasert’s one-line description of his third film, ‘Labyrinth Under Cyclone’. The notoriously trippy director of ‘Gagee, The Lady’s Tale’ and 2023 Golden Ganja winner ‘Blood Rain’ has finally made a movie with characters that actually speak, though there’s no dialogue until the 21st minute (not counting the V/O). Strong, beautiful images and textures are here a plenty, as before. If you enjoy staring at swirly shapes and don’t mind flashes, then you’re in good hands (if not, you won’t survive) among the supermindscapes, the artist with moving mercurial paint, the mermaid’s curse and the Darth Vader riff-off. Potentially a good date movie for getting to know someone. After watching it together you can argue over whether you find it pretentious or inspiring, and what, if anything, there might be to discover under the poetry and the grand visual texture.
