Nai Si Oui Sae Uen
Thailand, 1991, 105min., Thai – sorry, no English Subtitles

A vibrant interpretation of true crime facts that occurred between 1954 and 1958 in the provinces of Rayong, Prachuap Kirikhan, Bangkok and Natkhon Pathom. Si Oui, a scorned Chinese immigrant and former soldier during World War II, is sentenced to death in 1959 for killing children and eating their hearts and livers. Echoing with Fritz Lang’s M (inspired from the case of Peter Kürten), but describing horror from the murderer’s point of view, the film revolves around his actions and deeds after his arrival in Thailand, his erratic behavior, and the manhunt for him conducted by the police. This breathtaking chronicle offers an unsettling reflection on the criminal aspects of society and the moral responsibility of mentally ill persons. But most of all, it subtly leads us to explore Si Oui’s psyche, and beyond him to question the victim that lies within every man. (Aliosha  Herrera)
